Mack Enrichment Program
2009-2010 School Year - "Hope Rocks! "

Enrichment Units
The major component of the enrichment program is a weekly pull-out class serving highly-capable and achieving students in second through sixth grade.  Integrated units are offered on a variety of topics requiring students to use higher level thinking skills while participating in hands-on, open-ended activities.  Units are generally five sessions long for 2nd-5th grade and six sessions long for 6th grade.

Core Students 4th - 6th
Students qualify as “core” may attend all of the units for their grade level, with teacher approval.  Core students must place in the 95th percentile on their combined composite score from the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (current) and the Cognitive Abilities Test (taken within the last three years).  The Cognitive Abilities Test is administered to selected students, 3rd-6th grade, by the enrichment teacher.

Revolving Students
Students who have demonstrated particular strengths, talents or interest in the subject matter of a particular unit may be  revolved into a unit as recommended by their classroom teacher, based on space availabilty.

Math Enrichment
Math enrichment consists of a weekly thirty minute problem-solving lesson for students in grades two through six.  Students learn specific problem solving strategies and how to choose the best one.  Students are recommended by the classroom teacher.

Independent Learners
The Independent Learner component meets for 45 minutes each week.  Third and fourth graders research a topic of their choice and create a multimedia project.  Students qualify for this program by test scores and teacher recommendation.  The fifth and sixth graders write, edit, and publish a school newspaper.  They apply, with teacher approval, for the newspaper staff by writing a news article.
