More than string beads

03.12.13 : 09:57am

I am always on the lookout for “snapshots” of development to share with teachers and families, little stories from the classroom that help us SEE development. Today I was visiting a classroom of 3′s turning 4. The children asked me to help them string colored pasta. They didn’t really need my help, but they wanted my company. They asked me a lot of questions as they worked. What’s your favorite color? Do you have a dog? Do you know the more...

New Preschool Program Goals and Objectives

11.05.12 : 01:24pm

Not all of us went to preschool.  And if you did go to preschool, it may have looked very different.  But young children are different.  As recently as 10 years ago, preschool was probably a child's first chance to be in a group setting.  Today, many of our preschool students started in Toddler groups, music classes, BSF playgroups, and a variety of sports lessons.  By the time they enter our classrooms, they have had much experience.

Over the last few years, our preschool teachers have been

Children helping children

09.14.12 : 11:14am

Last year, our Three Points preschool classes used their Jog-a-thon tithe to purchase some baby dolls for a new school in Uganda.  In June, the children had a chance to hear about the children at the Ugandan school from Ron Taylor (BCS Superintendent) and Shelli Brasted (BCS Service Learning Co-ordinator).  The children dressed and played with the dolls in class and wrote letters to the Ugandan children.  Over the summer, the dolls and letters were delivered and this week we received pictures

Sunshine + sand = a great day at preschool

05.07.12 : 02:16pm

When the sun comes out, so do the sandals and shorts.  At preschool, that means means longer recess and a great fun in the sandbox.

And if the news of a sunny day isn't enough, we just confirmed that we will be able to offer another morning Pre-K class for the 2012-2013 school year at our Woodinville/Mack campus.  We are currently contacting families on our long waitlist but we would also encourage new families to give us a call and come in for a tour.

Happy Easter

04.05.12 : 01:00pm

I can see a hint of sunshine behind those rain clouds today.  Hoping to have a bit of sunshine next week while we are off on Spring Break.

See you all after April 16th!

"The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing of birds is come, And the voice of the turtle-dove is heard in our land."  Song of Solomon 2:12

Happy Easter.

Counting to 100

03.13.12 : 07:41am

We often hear children talking about big numbers, one hundred, one thousand, infinity.  Preschool children love to rattle off numbers, counting from one to ten to twenty and eventually to one hundred.  This is a big deal and signals the beginning of mathematics learning.

There are many opportunities in our classrooms to practice counting.  We count children as a part of our attendance and calendar routines, we count cups or napkins as we prepare the snack, we count as we wait during an

Investigating

02.14.12 : 09:27am

Much of the work in our preschool classrooms is active and open ended, busy, and often noisy. There are also times for children to have their own materials and to practice a more directed activity.
At the science table, students are learning to follow directions, to wonder about what might happen (will the drops flow differently if we change the surface or the angle), to talk about their work and describe what they are seeing.  They are acquiring new vocabulary and learning the value of

Thinking about our work

12.15.11 : 01:01pm

Three and four year olds have a pretty quick pace.  It is not unusual for our students to move quickly from one activity to the next, sometimes forgetting about that project they have just completed.  And often, out of sight is out of mind.

One of our goals in preschool is to help children begin to think about the work they are doing and recognize not only their efforts but to notice when they are learning new skills.  Our classroom and hallway displays are a great place for children to gather
